MBA Entrance Exams in India: CAT vs MAT vs XAT vs GMAT vs MRNAT – Which is Right for You?

After completing a three- or four-year degree, the question inevitably arises in the mind of many undergraduate or graduate students: What next? The obvious solution to many is to get a Master of Business Administration (MBA)- a degree that gives them the access to unlimited career advancement in any industry. However, before entering their dream business school, applicants have to pass an entrance test, and this is the first milestone on their MBA path.

When students start researching about MBA programs in India, they usually find famous examinations such as CAT, MAT, XAT, GMAT, or MRNAT. All exams are headed to the same destination as your dream B-school, yet the routing systems vary greatly in their goals, format, level, and the preparation plan.

Understand the Major MBA Entrance Exams:

1.CAT (Common Admission Test)

One of the most challenging and prestigious gateways to MBA colleges in India is the CAT exam as administered by the Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs). All IIMs and some of the best management institutes accept it, and it is the most competitive of all.

2.MAT (Management Aptitude Test)

MAT is conducted by the All-India Management Association (AIMA) and offers access to mid-tier and private B-schools in India. It has several exam sessions during the year with flexible formats (online/offline), making it usually a convenient choice among aspirants.

3.XAT (Xavier Aptitude Test)

Organized by XLRI Jamshedpur, the XAT is designed for those aspiring to join Xavier’s Institute of Management and many other reputed B-schools.  It has its own unique pattern, which tests candidates on decision-making along with general aptitude.

4.GMAT (Graduate Management Admission Test)

The GMAT is a test that is internationally acknowledged and has been conducted by the Graduate Management Admission Council (GMAC) and is most compatible to that category of students that have plans of studying MBA in other countries. However, it is also embraced by the most reputable Indian institutes like ISB and SPJIMR. It is appealing to working-professional due to its year-long testing flexibility.

5.MRNAT (Manav Rachna National Aptitude Test)

Manav Rachna Educational Institutions (MREI) is situated at the core of the City of Delhi-NCR, with an excellent MBA program, MBA Business Analytics at Manav Rachna University (MRU). The gateway test is the MRNAT exam, which is taken in two stages according to the admission cycle. Frequency of the Exam

  • CAT is conducted annually (usually in November)
  • MAT is conducted multiple times a year
  • XAT is also conducted once a year ( usually in January)
  • GMAT is conducted on a year-round basis, as per the centres and candidates’ availability.
  • MRNAT is also conducted twice ( Phase 1 and 2), and as per the admission cycle.

Mode and Duration

Most of the entrances are conducted online, i.e., computer-based tests; however, a few, like the MAT, are performed in offline mode. The general exam duration is 120 minutes. Some have a duration of 2.5-3 hours as well.
